Maybe I'm spending too much time sat in front of a pc reading about other people's holidays and holiday companies, but last night I started thinking about some of the things I was reading.

These are just my thoughts:

It has long been said that holiday companies appear to charge the earth - maybe due to the fact that they have to remember their shareholders.
It is also known that holiday companies try to pay hotel and apartments owners as little as possible yet require said owners to do far more, usually involving more expense for the owners.

This set me thinking about the other side of the coin so to speak.

The majority of holiday makers spend a lot of hard earned cash when on holiday and if they are going somewhere new some will do a fair bit of research about the place they are staying at.

Occassionaly some are dissapointed:-

Maybe due to being advised their chosen place of stay offered something it didn't
Maybe due to the fact that their chosen place of stay wasn't up to the standard they expected ( not everyone's standards/thoughts are the same i.e self catering )

Another factor could be the weather - if the weather is bad throughout a holiday people do complain far more.

So what happens when people do complain to their holiday company? Well usually the holiday company will offer some sort of money off voucher or refund. If the complaint has been about the hotel or apartments, the holiday company deduct that amount of money from what they pay the hotel or apartment owners.

All well and good - but is it.

It has long been known that some people make dubious claims on insurance policies. The more claims insurance companies have to deal with the higher everyone's premiums become.

Listening to some people on holiday and also reading some of the so called holiday review sites makes me wonder if the same is happening with holidays - "oh the weather was awful, spoilt our holiday, let's think of something to complain about to the holiday company and get some money back"

Who suffers? Well I'd like to bet the holiday company doesn't

We recently needed to use the services of the local courier company in Roda - ACS to send a document to The Ministry of Correspondence in Athens for translation, the translation costing us €12 for express service. The cost to send was €11 - not bad we thought. Thinking we were dealing with a company that knew what they were doing, we paid our €11 and queried if we needed to pay the cost of translation there and then. We were told we only needed to pay the €11, so off our package went.

A few days later I visited the office to see if there was any news on our package, only to be informed that it was on it's way back from Athens as it had been refused due to no payment being included (the €12). I was then advised that they would send the package back together with the payment, but I would have to pay another €11, which I refused to pay stating they had made the error as I had originally offered the €12. After a few heated words they reluctantly agreed to resend the package FOC and issued me with a receipt for the €12 for the translation costs. Hey Presto... as soon as the package reached the Roda office it would be returned to Athens for delivery.

Almost 2 weeks later we received a text message from ACS to say our package was at Roda ready for collection, so off I went to pick it up.

Before they would release the parcel to me they wanted a further €39.40!! which I queried in no uncertain terms. Now this is where the Greek/English translations/interpretations go wrong. It appears that the lady in ACS Roda thought I wanted them to deliver the parcel to The Ministry, wait in the queue for the translation to be done then return the translation straight back to Roda. Certainly not what I asked them to do. The €39.40 charge was to cover that service. OK I suppose that charge would seems reasonable for that level of service. However if I had asked for that service I would have expected the package to be back with me the following day.

Reality......
Package originally departed Roda for Athens on 13.10.2010
Package returned to Roda due to being refused 26.10.2010
Package again departed Roda for Athens 27.10.2010
Package arrives back at Roda 3.11.2010
Roda branch send me SMS text to collect 9.11.2010

All the above dates are as per the ACS tracking system and they make very interesting reading.

I telephoned ACS customer service to query charges and apparently the Area Manager for Corfu was supposed to be phoning us back on the 9th Nov..... still waiting!!

My personal conclusion...... I feel as though we have been well ripped off for a service that was extremely lacking, putting it politely. As for Customer Services, well apart from one very nice lady who took all the details all I can say is that ACS certainly have a lot to learn about Customer Service!! In my opinion the Greeks regularly use a certain word which would describe ACS very well!!

Much has been said on other sites about the roadworks in Roda.

No more work has been done on the new drainage system this year (possibly due to funding) so there are still some black pipes lying around here and there.

As for the the straightening of the road from the crossroads to the beach which was supposed to be completed by 26th April ......... well once again despite what others have said it looks like it is not going to be finished on time. Apparently some kerbstones where laid in the wrong place and are having to be relaid. There is still a fair amount of work to be done and I can't see it being finished for the start of the season.

Avrio maybe?

The good news is that local business are working hard to ensure that they are ready to once again offer a warm welcome to all.
